silke hilsing: impress flexible display

Check out this new piece of kit! Taking the touch screen to a new level. Pressure sensors in the foam react to the force of the press. Only 4 uses at the moment, and I don't think its very practical but looks very fun!

Graffiti Research

Again I am really enjoying researching for this project. Have been searching London, Reading and Portsmouth for graffiti and have found some brilliant works. Here are some images of some of the graffiti in Portsmouth.

Just a few photos of the graffiti here in Portsmouth. I am looking at the forms, shapes and lines as well as the colours used.

Getting There

Since the last post I've had my dissertation mark back, and its a good one that I am happy about :D

Right I have 8 weeks to get this final project finished.

I have been working on my youth and urban culture project and have finally got a final design which I am going to start to make in the next week! I'm working with laminated flexiply and laminated glass to make a coffee table aimed towards people like myself. I have been looking at images much like the sculptor Richard Serra, however on a much smaller scale.

Here are some of my own works, simply made out of paper and paper clips to study the shape and form of the pieces.

As you can see, they are simple flowing forms. They are inspired by the flowing linear patterns in graffiti and street art. These were some initial models after some extensive research into graffiti and street art, the urban scene, youth culture and similar artists and designers. After a few weeks of this I managed to decide on my favourite form, perfect the curves in it and decide on materials and sizes.

A quick sketch of my final design and forms.

In the run up to deciding the final design I have also worked with laminating layers of flexiply together and steam bending timber to work out the easiest technique to use. From the testing I found out that laminating is certainly the easier option for what I want to do.

I'm hoping that my next post will have some images of my final piece coming together, as I am hoping to get into the workshops to begin constructing the formas and moulds for the laminating process in the next week.
